So every year for the last 3 years, I go to a Kentucky Derby party at a friends house. The only thing you have to do to gain entrance to the party is to put money down on the races. So jellybean and I put down some money to be good sports. Let me tell you this... we have never even come close to winning any money back previously. But wouldn't you know it the first time we ever win, it would be on the horse I affectionately call 'the one that died 2 minutes after the end of the race.' So since I like animals more than most people, I have felt really bad for winning money on the horse that died. It is like blood diamond money or something. You will be discouraged to hear that jellybean and I came in a dismal last place in the 'Human Races' which take place at the aforementioned party, after the horse races. Jelly bean then re-broke her leg at the end of the race and we had to put her down immediately. (just kidding about that last part) I blame my poor performance on my emotional state. You would laugh though if you saw jelly bean pushing me blindfolded on a toddler sized big wheel... So anyway, the question of the day is what should we do with the 30 dollars in 'blood money' that we won off the late great eight belles? I think it should be something to properly honor the greatest philly ever, that proudly went balls out and gave her life to try to win us money.
We love you Eight Belles. Shine on you crazy diamond.

I don't know how I can rescue a ragged dog like Sam on one hand and put money on overbred animals in horses on the other. Maybe the blood money needs to go to animal rescue?
Artee, SC, and I watched the derby and had a julep at my casa. Artee had decided to root for 8 belles b/c she was the only filly, I picked her because 8 is my lucky number. In the final moments of the race, we went from elation to shock. So sad sad sad. We didn't put any money down, but I can see how winning would be definitely bitter/sweet--heavy on the bitter.
I think animal rescue would be a good use of the cash. Or maybe plant a tree in her honor--a friend family tree, if you will. :)
I'm less excited about attending the derby in the future now. We always said we wanted to go someday.
Eat an equestrian burger and that way you can pretend to taste the glory as well.
Artee, that is hilarious!
I like the planting a tree idea. i wonder if the pineapple guavas I recently planted count...
I don't think you can retroactively declare the guava trees to be in memory of Eight Belles. But I like the idea of using the $ for a living thing.
I agree about putting the money towards a living thing: I say put the money down on a cock fight. Turn that 30 into 60 baby! Double down, roll the dice, and bet on red!
Just ask Roy Jones Jr. Cock-fighting keeps kids in the hood off the streets and doesn't promote violent human behavior at all. So says the guy who earned his living beating people up.
